Writing the “Essay” for the Area of Study Belonging

One way of considering your essay structure is what I refer to as the “Pop, lock and drop” method.

Pop- establish your thesis- or ‘open up’ the line of  argument, hence POP.

Lock refers to the consolidation of your arguments and the ways in which you will prove your thesis. For this section you may want to remember:-

S = State- your point, using a topic sentence.

A= amplify/expand the argument by close analysis of your texts, making connections between and amongst your prescribed- and other related- texts and their language features.

S = support by using quotes and refering to specific incident, characters and so forth.

Establish several paragraphs in this way, thus constructing a sustained response which conveys insight, perception and a convincingly detailed knowledge and understanding of Belonging, not belonging and the effects thereof.

Drop – this refers to your concluding paragraph. Here you will summarise the gist of your arguments and draw some conclusions about what you understand about Belonging in relation to the question asked and your study of the Area of study.

TIP : Remember that your study is about your understanding of belonging and not belonging. This is the central axis on which your study turns. Your texts are merely avenues through which you can arrive at some ideas about belonging and this therefore gives you some examples of the effects and consequences about peoples’ experiences of belonging or not.
